At 15, Cape Breton’s Annah-Clare MacLean is building a western wear company

At 15, Annah-Clare MacLean already knows something many fashion designers with decades of experience never learn. When it comes to marketing her own clothing line, if she isn’t willing to wear it, she isn’t willing to sell it. “I didn’t want to start off with a bad reputation,” she says.
It’s a philosophy that has guided every decision behind Sydney, Cape Breton-based LEGIT Western Wear since MacLean launched the company in September 2024.

Stevi Jardine is one of MacLean’s riding coaches. She has purchased some of the teen’s apparel and says she’s impressed by the quality of the product and her entrepreneurial spirit.
“It’s pretty legit, like the name,” said Jardine. “I like the way it looks, but it’s also really durable. It’s not like you wash it a couple of times and you’ve got to throw it away. You can wash it and wash it and wash it and it’s still like brand new.”

“When I got back home, I realized I have a bunch of western clothes, but there’s a limited supply and not a lot of spots to get it around here,” said Annah-Clare, now 14, who will enter Grade 9 at Munroe Academy in the fall. "I thought we need more, and my mom was like ‘why don’t you start a business?’ and I was like ‘I can do that at this age?’ and she said, ‘you can do anything.’”

For Annah-Clare, it’s personal. “A professional rodeo coming to Cape Breton is so exciting for our community,” she says. “As a new barrel racer myself, I can’t wait to watch the incredible riders and horses and I’m really looking forward to introducing my brand to new people!”
